Fred disc magazine was owned and run during the 1990’s by Colin MacDonald and is the finest disc-based magazine ever to come out of Monifieth in Scotland.

Fred ran for 82 mostly monthly issues and it’s success spawned the production of FRED Publishing that managed to secure the most famous licence of all for Lemmings.

Colin has kindly permitted the distribution of All Fred Issues 1-82 as well as the special “Best of’s” for Fred, SamCo and ZAT.

The original disc contents were extracted from FredEx on Fred 73 written mainly by Brian McConnell and have been converted and expanded for World of Sam by Dan Dooré.

Best game ever to be produced on the Sam? Maybe not, but its a barell of laughs whatever way you look at it - a true classic (in its own right!) The random music sample finnishes the game of in true f*** up style - get stoned then play this game - a true MUST!!!!
Another fine example of free games by FRED disk magazine :)

Sampled Audio, anyone?

Although not strictly about FRED, I thought this was probably the best place to ask this question…

I remember things like Dinosorcerer, the Star Trek demo, Captain Comic, etc, were good examples of the SAM using sampled audio. Does anyone out there know any issues of FRED(or anywhere else for that matter) with programs/routines/etc for playing back sampled audio in your own programs and how to transfer/create such files? I’ve been looking through the FREDs myself, but no luck yet…

I’m putting together something new, and thought some sampled audio would be a nice touch, but in all honesty have no idea how to get and implement it like I’ve heard on other programs. So any help would be greatly appreciated! :-)

Never seen any standard SAA1099 4-bit sample programs out there for general use, but I do know a coder who would be able to knock stuff up for you… ;)

Although as I know what you are doing, and how you are doing it, you would only be able to do spot sound effects - like Captain Comic. Writing something to have sampled sound continuously would have to be written around the sound engine in machine code, like I did for most of the stuff to use the Quazar Surround soundcard, and for the Special Edition of Money Bags (SAM Revival 9) which had continous SAA1099 4-bit sampled music throughout the game.
