Sam élite

Hardware

The Sam élite was a re-packaged Sam Coupé with the addition of:

  1. 512kB Memory Expansion as standard
  2. A Floppy drive (with Drive 1 in the right hand bay instead of the left)
  3. A parallel printer interface
  4. Modified ROM version 3.0 (called 3.5)
  5. Black feet instead of blue
  6. Un-sprayed External PSU in Amstrad grey.

The Sam Drive slim-line floppy drives from Citizen had been withdrawn them from the European market in 1990 and were replaced with standard 3.5 inch drives which required some modification to the front drive plates for the faces to stick out.

The Parallel interface was squeezed into the case and had a port on the back of the plastic case above the Euroconnector.

Blue/Black feet.

I’ve removed the comment about Elite’s having black feet - probably the odd few, but all the Elite’s i’ve seen have had blue feet.

My original Sam Coupé, bought in 1993 had black feet, and to date only seen two other Sam’s with them. I wonder if they were an initial batch to test the mouldings before the main blue ones were made and later just mixed in.

Also, the Sam Elite printer port had a proper hole cut in the back of the white case for the connector. I’ve got a photo somewhere.

Yes, all the Mutant SAMs

Yes, all the Mutant SAMs I’ve seen had a port on the rear of the case, and the ugly sticker covering the proper MGT logo.

Sam Elite

No wonder it didnt sell - it looks horrible

SAM Looked a lot better

SAM Looked a lot better without the stupid sticked hiding it’s nice MGT logo.

Poor......

If your bringing out a ‘newer’ version then just bunging on a printer port, adding black feet and using stickers to cover the original logos just make it look like a cheap bodge. It would have been interesting to see what other ‘family’ of SAM computers MGT would have came out with.

Re: Poor...

Black feet weren’t specific to the Elite. The few sets of black feet out there were some of the original test mouldings of the feet - they were done in different material and colours. The full production batches were all blue.

I’ve got a set of grey feet here, another of the test colours - this pair was caught in the wild when a SAM came to me for upgrading - and I made the chap an offer to buy them (and of course replaced them with the standard blue!)

I’ve also got a bag with the last blue feet produced which were kept by the mouldings company and part of a batch of old SAM stuff I was able to get from them which also included interface boxes in black plastic - the test moulds before the white production run.

Re: Poor...

Forgot to say above, my first SAM Coupe had black feet!

Edit! Ah! I actually said that years ago on this page! Oops! :)

My Sam has black feet too.

My Sam has black feet too. But mine wasn’t one of the first batch. It was actually one of the later ones. I got mine after MGT went squit and were bought by another compnay(Can’t remember what they were called but they were in wales). Mine had the floppy drive mod so it took a standard PC drive but it still has the proper SAM logo
