2005-

In 1978, Earth was invaded by a monochromatic race of aliens from the planet Potaito.

Taken to the brink of total destruction by the devastatingly predictable movement of the attacking force, a lone robotic alien commando, code-named Dave, was called upon to rescue our planet.

Unfortunately, during the fight Dave’s spaceship was destroyed.

Guide Dave around 15 levels gathering bits he can use to build a new ship, so he may return home.

Default keys:- n: left, m: right, space: jump. c: pause, x: toggle music.

All five keys can be redefined from the title screen by pressing C.

It lives! (sort of)

Site Maintenance

If you can see this message, then you’re viewing worldofsam on its new home at pinkstuff II! The old server was getting on for ten years old (it’s a Pentium2!) and we’d seen some hardware unreliability lately, so it was only a matter of time before my sites would have to move house.

In an ideal world this would all happen quietly behind the scenes and you wouldn’t notice any difference…

In practice there are a whole bunch of grubby differences - largely due to now running on a more recent version of PHP which has taken a dislike to the (rather old) version of drupal on which this site is based. I’m trying to fix issues as and when I can identify them (mostly by applying a patch from a later drupal version), unfortunately as this site relies quite heavily on some custom field types to the the flexinode module (which was deprecated, rewritten, and folded into drupal core with an incompatible API within a year of starting up the site) this means I need to find and apply individual patches since upgrading wholesale to drupal 7 would pretty much require rewriting the site from scratch.

Please let me know (email might be best) if you see any issues, especially relating to logins (I’ve patched one session handling problem [92802]). Also, I already know that:

  • A whole bunch of the administrator pages are showing up blank, but that shouldn’t affect anyone but me…
  • Image handling is not properly reinstalled yet, so uploading title images or screenshots will not generate thumbnails correctly Fixed.
  • Note that the URL will show up as “worldofsam.intensity.org.uk” for a little while. I’ll change this back to worldofsam.org after a few days when its likely that the DNS change has propagated. Should be back to normal now.
  • The edit-user page doesn’t appear to work (“php: Parameter 2 to user_user() expected to be a reference, value given”), so I can’t approve new accounts or block existing slightly-spamming ones… Fixed in module.inc
  • I consistently seem to get logged out after editing a content page which someone else last edited.

    2005-

In the year 2146 scientists discover that a terrible fate is in store for the galaxy: dark matter, that had always kept the universe stable, was fading away as if it was seeping into some other dimension…

Using faster than light telescopes the first signs of impending chaos could be seen at the distant edges of the observable sky…

The force of gravity, finding new strength, was pulling star clusters inwards and crushing entire galaxies as the expansion of the universe itself began to slow and falter…

At CERN new types of matter were created and tested until at last a molecule was formulated, Unlikelium, that when genetically engineered into terrestrial plants enhanced the normal process of photosynthesis to produce bosons of pure dark energy.

Cosmonaut landscape gardeners bravely cultivated specially designed astroturf platforms that were placed in orbit around areas that were found to be low in dark energy.

Slowly but surely the universe found equilibrium and then began to expand as before.

A system of quotas ensured enough dark matter was harvested to prevent disaster and all was well for over a hundred years…

It is now 2251 and a mega-recession is forcing huge cutbacks across the whole of society. In an effort to lower costs a robot gardener is created that will replace all human gardeners if tests find it to be more productive.

The Astro Gardeners Union is outraged and in a direct challenge to the government has put forward their best girl to compete against the robot by fulfilling quotas of increasing difficulty in a head to head battle!

Use the joystick or QAOP to move and fire or M to perform actions.

The action available will depend on which mode the player is in: walking/squishing, picking/planting or watering mode.

The space bar is used to toggle between the three modes.

Use the NMI button to return to the main menu at any time.

Spectrum titles with a SAM version on the other WoS

    News

Spectrum titles which were also released on the SAM Coupe are now also listed on www.worldofspectrum.org:

    SimCoupe for Android

    News

Any chance of seeing more ports of SimCoupe or has the project been retired now? It is such a perfect emulator, and I’d love to see it running on the new tablets / phone running Android.

    2005-

This python script will load files from a ZX Spectrum .tap file (such as the output for Retro-X animation conversions) and output an .hdf hard disk image file, which can be loaded by SimCoupe as the Atom disk, containing those files in BDOS records.

The server host will be down for a few hours in the early hours of tomorrow morning, for power systems maintenance. Hopefully everything will be back to normal by 08:00.

Real Time Worlds gone into admin

    News

Realtime Worlds have gone into admin. No direct relevance to SAM, but this was the pairing of our very own Colin Macdonald and DMA Designs (who licensed Lemmings to SAM) and would probably not be the company it is (was?) today without our little blue footed friend.

    BBC News story here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-11003456

And nice interview with Colin here where he talks a little SAM: http://www.square-go.com/feature/970

Best of luck for the future for all those involved. And thanks to Colin for all the great stuff he did for the SAM community (although I never realised (from the interview) he was involved in the Manic Miner licence - thought that was Dave, Bob and SAMCo?
