SAMflate

Utility

Andrew Collier

2005-

An implementation of the inflate decompression algorithm from RFC1951, as used by gzip and other compatible utilities. In other words, it’s like gunzip for the Sam.

SAMflate requires two consecutive pages as temporary storage. Load the code at an offset of 8k into the second of these pages (or in other words, at any multiple of 16384 bytes from the starting address in the image).

Then load your gz file somewhere else in memory, and simply
CALL samflate, gzdata, destination
where samflate is the address you loaded the samflate code, gzdata is the address you loaded your gzipped file, and destination is the address you would like it decoded to.

All three addresses are in BASIC’s format (i.e. 16384 is the start of page 0)

It’s usually OK for the end of the decoded data to overlap with the beginning of the gzipped data (but not the other way around!)

This issue of SAM Revival costs £3.99 for the UK, or £4.79 for EU including Airmail postage. You can also subscribe for six issues at a discounted price of £21.98 (UK) or £26.98 (EU). More information and ordering information can be found on the Quazar website at www.samcoupe.com

SAM Revival is a printed magazine with an accompanying cover disk of software and aims to be packed full of SAM Coupé news, interesting features, articles and interviews, catering for everything SAM related. The first issue launched in August 2002, and the magazine is now read by SAM users in 20 countries.

SAM Revival issue 22 features the full commercial game ‘Burglar Bob’ on the coverdisk. This was one of Jupiter Software’s last titles produced for the SAM back in the late 1990s. Also on the coverdisk is a wireframe 3D demo from Thomas Harte who is looking to produce a full 3D engine for the SAM Coupe.

Inside the magazine you’ll find all eight pages of news covering all the latest news from around the SAM world, some of the highlights of which include news on the first application that is well underway for use with the Trinity Ethernet Interface. Called SAMonline this application will connect to the internet to get all the latest news for the SAM, as well as offering free software downloadings of new software as well as classic games and old disk magazines. There is also news on the development of the Mayhem Accelerator and also the latest emulator from Simon Owen which allows the SAM to emulate the Commodore VIC-20!

Review by Andrew Collier in Zodiac magazine:

The first thing that hits you when skimming through the issue is the quality of the presentation. Simon works as a professional journalist, and it shows: If there’s one Sam magazine you’d show off to all your scornful neighbours, this has got to be it. It beats anything else I’ve seen, certainly including the copy of Crashed! which their editor was shoving up my nose last April. I mean wow, it’s superb.
