Sam Revival issue 15 now out!

News

Issue 15 of Sam Revival magazine was released back in July. (Click here for pricing and ordering details…)

Like the previous issue, issue 15 features spot colour throughout the magazine to add life to screenshots and photographs. This issue starts off with the regular news section, which looks in detail at the completition of the prototype of the Mayhem Accelerator which speeds the Sam Coupe from it’s normal 6MHz speed up to 10, 16 and 20MHz! The Sam Scene Roundup looks at news and announcements from around the Sam world including the work-in-progress of an emulator to emulate the Space Invaders arcade machine, the port of Sim Coupe emulator to the Sony PSP.

The feature article in this issue takes a look at The Kaleidoscope interface which was released briefly in 1992 by SamCo which offered 32768 colour shades, but in reality was totally unusable. Other magazine contents include the Coupe Correspondense letters page and the Sam Snippets!

The coverdisk with this issue features the classic Sam adventure game Legend of Eshan by John Eyre

I don’t know if I’m the copyright holder of Batz 'n Balls, but I certainly am the author and would like to grant permission to everybody to download this game. Lots of years I deleted about 100Mb of Sam and Spectrum programs (and all my Z80 sources). Still regret that every now and then …

Site Maintenance

Apologies for the downtime.

The computer which hosts worldofsam.org suffered a hardware failure (the CD drive suddenly went bananas, and was spreading enough rubbish on the IDE bus to disrupt communication with the hard disk. As a result the boot filesystem was corrupted beyond feasible recovery, and we installed a new replacement Ubuntu, containing new versions of all the software - meaning that every service has had to be checked in turn to ensure the configuration is compatible with the update).

There was no damage to the database files nor the images archive. All parts of worldofsam should now be working normally, so please email me if you find something which isn’t.

Utility programmer for the SAM SC_ Steves Software coming soon

News

I’m Steve Nutting the Sam Coupe Utility programmer with thanks to Simon Owens new Sim Coupe and renewed interest in the Sam will upload my vast catalogue of software.

This will take time as I don`t for example have a PC that will accept an internal floppy drive, only USB which will not except Floppy Disc loading on Simcoupe.

I started off with SCASSEMBLER in May 1990 5 months after the Sam coupe was first released most of the work was done on the Spectrum months before the Sam came onto the market.

Some of the other authors earlier Sam programs were created with my Assembler.

The last program was SCWORDPro one of the longest and complex programs I had written.

I also hope to upload all the source for all the utility software as well as the pdf manuals, so you can see for yourself just how hard I had to work as I created my own routines rather than use the Sam Rom.

This will also quickly verify and prove that I have indeed programmed and allowed my software to be shared with all those interested.

All the best,
Steve

BitaByte Software

Started off programming the odd little demo or game, once I had a few disks full of stuff I was pleased to get some stuff on Fred disk mag.

Most notable programs that were on Fred were NotePad (Fred 36), a very fully featured word processor written entirely in SAM Basic, and then a few months later the re-written and much faster NotePrint which added the ability to add lines, pictures and different fonts to a document, admittedly with the loss of the four documents in memory feature.

Also wrote a few articles for FRED, and had Directory Manager on one of the last issues of Outlet magazine.</p> <p>When games and applications were becoming too big to be included in FRED I started up BitaByte Disk Magazine, issue one was compiled and written almost entirely by me, and issue 2 was done before I started trying to sell it. Sales were low, at about the 15-20 mark, as most famous mags wouldnt advertise it for me, but when Outlet featured a text ad for issue 4 featuring the massive 200K game Lemming Attack sales picked up and with Arcadia Disk Mag kindly featuring a demo of Lemming Attack in their issue 6 things improved again :)

Issue 5 was probably the best, as the code and programs were getting more complicated, with full screen scrollers in basic, a little Sphera multiple layer shooter and a demo of a game called Tomato Antix. the main menu being very nice, even if it did run at just 3 fps, lol

Issue 6 was never finished as I received an Amiga to start converting NotePad over.

Some SAM video`s at :-

Still coding on SAM, 15 years after I first started.

Working on two games :-

Tomato Antics, a totally revamped version of the original 1992 demo. running at 35-45 fps and looking much better.

Jimf n Oobs Go Whack - an arcade adventure platformer in a similar mould to the Dizzy games, with nearly 150 frames of animation on the main character Jimf, comedy coming from his faithful sidekick Oobs and the job of kidnapping sheep to get on with. set in the 1600s yet Jimf `n Oobs are aliens.
